We are Assembly Four, a fast growing, purpose-driven technology company dedicated to fostering positive change within the sex work, human rights, LGBTQIA+, and intersecting communities.

We operate on the belief that impact is as important as profit, and work in collaboration with sex workers from around the globe to develop products and services that empower them to thrive, not just survive.

Everyone should have the autonomy to make decisions about their bodies and sexual lives without fear of violence or discrimination. This is a fundamental human right – and one that sex workers are still fighting for.

If you’re eager to join a remote-first team with diverse representation from sex worker, neurodivergent, disabled, and LGBTQIA+ communities, committed to advancing sex worker autonomy and liberation through advocacy and innovative products, read on.

We’re building a modern event-driven data platform that powers both real-time operations and analytics at scale. To get there, we need a Senior Data Engineer who can wear two hats:

  • Engineer first – designing and building data pipelines, event-driven infrastructure, and a scalable medallion data lake.
  • Analyst second – helping the business explore, model, and understand data until we grow the team further.

This is a hands-on role where you’ll take ownership of parts of the data stack, partner with systems, product and engineering teams, and ensure data is trustworthy, private-by-design, and analytics-ready.

What you’ll do as a Senior Data Engineer within our Data team:

  • Design, build, and maintain reliable data pipelines using Redpanda Connect (Benthos)Apache Iceberg, and ClickHouse.
  • Operate our event-driven data architecture, ensuring schemas are enforced, privacy is protected, and data flows cleanly from producers to the lake and warehouse.
  • Translate business needs into analytics-ready data models and self-service dashboards (Metabase/Superset).
  • Collaborate with product engineers to integrate event emission libraries into applications.
  • Act as the bridge between stakeholders and analytics – sometimes rolling up your sleeves to model and visualise datasets or produce insights.
  • Break down and lead streams of work, providing technical direction, surfacing blockers, and ensuring high-quality delivery.

Your background:

  • Experience as a data engineer (or software engineer working heavily with data), ideally with time spent as an analyst – you’re comfortable querying, modelling, and explaining data, but your strength is in data engineering.
  • Proficiency in data pipeline development, streaming/event systems, and data lakes.
  • Strong SQL and experience with OLAP databases (ClickHouse, BigQuery, Snowflake, or similar).
  • Comfort with Python, Ruby, or JVM-based languages for data tooling.
  • Familiarity with schema enforcement (Avro/JSON Schema/Protobuf) and medallion data architectures.
  • A strong focus on data privacy and governance – ensuring PII is handled with care.
  • Great communication skills – able to collaborate across technical and non-technical teams.

Our stack

  • Our stack is almost entirely self-hosted, so you’ll be working with:

    • Event processing: Redpanda Connect (Benthos)
    • Schema management: Karapace schema registry (JSON Schema)
    • Workflow orchestration: Temporal
    • Data lake: Apache Iceberg on S3
    • Modelling: dbt + SQL
    • Analytics: ClickHouse + Metabase/Superset
    • External connector/ingestion: Airbyte
    • Deployment: Kubernetes

Who you are:

  • You excel at top-notch, autonomous delivery and take pride in producing work others can rely on.
  • You are proactive, detail-oriented, and thrive in ownership of defined scopes of work.
  • You value privacy and security for both users and colleagues.
  • You are diligent, empathetic, and calm under pressure, comfortable with incident response.
  • You seek out root causes, prioritise holistic improvements, and communicate blockers early.
  • You are comfortable working with adult content and supporting marginalised communities, including sex workers, neurodivergent people, and disabled people.

In an ideal world, you would also have:

  • Previous experience engaging with and a willingness to learn about marginalised communities, particularly sex workers, neurodivergent individuals, and people with disability.
  • Experience in or a strong understanding of sex work.
  • Experience working in both startup environments and fully remote work settings.
