Chief Financial Officer (CFO)

Location

Australia & New Zealand

(Remote/Hybrid)

We are Assembly Four, a fast growing, purpose-driven technology company dedicated to fostering positive change within the sex work, human rights, LGBTQIA+, and intersecting community spaces.

Everyone should have the autonomy to make decisions about their bodies and sexual lives without fear of violence or discrimination. This is a fundamental human right – and one that sex workers are still fighting for.

We operate on the belief that impact is as important as profit, and work in collaboration with sex workers from around the globe to develop products and services that support them to thrive, not just survive.

If you’re eager to join a remote-first, 4-day work week organisation with diverse representation from sex worker, neurodivergent, disabled, and LGBTQIA+ communities, committed to advancing sex worker autonomy and liberation through advocacy and innovative products, read on!

The team

The Finance team at Assembly Four is small but impactful. It forms part of the backbone of the business, ensuring people and bills get paid, while keeping an eye on how we spend money. As our first ever Chief Financial Officer (CFO), you will have the opportunity to take the team to the next level by turning it into a strategic function that enables our continued growth.

The CFO is also a member of the Executive team at Assembly Four, which shapes and executes the strategy for the organisation as a whole. With the autonomy and liberation of sex workers as our ultimate goal, the team brings diverse expertise and experiences to the table to ensure our people, product offerings, community, and financial sustainability are well-served.

The role

As Assembly Four’s CFO, you take a holistic approach to leadership, ensuring A4’s financial health, resilience, and long-term sustainability while also leading the organisation as a whole. You strengthen the insight, systems, and discipline required to operate ethically, manage risk, and make confident decisions.

This role blends strategic financial leadership with commercial acumen and strong people leadership. It requires comfort operating in ambiguity, strong ethical judgement, and the ability to build fit-for-purpose financial systems and teams in a mission-led and values-driven technology company.

What you will do

  • You play a key role in the Executive leadership team for the organisation, which shapes vision and strategy, acts on opportunities, manages risk, allocates resources, and mentors other leaders.
  • You manage, mentor, and develop the Finance team, and work through them to achieve outcomes and improve team performance.
  • You design and execute the financial strategy for Assembly Four, aligning plans and projects with broader organisational strategy.
  • You oversee the design, effectiveness, and continuous improvement of our financial systems and processes, such as: accounting; payroll; budgeting; forecasting; banking; asset management; compliance; internal controls and policies; and systems integration.
  • You safeguard Assembly Four and the communities we serve by owning financial risk management and ensuring financial sustainability, as well as partnering with the Company Secretary to support the Board in meeting its fiduciary and statutory obligations.
  • You provide additional leadership and support for adjacent teams and functions that work alongside Finance, such as People & Culture, Legal, and Business Operations.

Your background

  • You are ethically motivated and driven by social impact: you take an active interest in diversity and the empowerment of marginalised communities, and prioritise human rights and values as an integral part of your work on both at societal level, and in your day to day in the workplace.
  • You are either a Chartered Accountant (CA) or Certified Practising Accountant (CPA), and have strong subject matter expertise and extensive experience in a professional setting, with a focus on financial control or corporate finance.
  • You have experience in a CFO role in a medium-sized organisation, or have worked at a Senior Director/VP level in a scale-up stage tech company. Experience working in bootstrapped start-ups is highly regarded.
  • You are a leader with strong people management and mentoring skills, with exceptional ability to communicate clearly and effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • You are able make good risk decisions based on risk appetite and can think strategically about a variety of topics and areas, while also being able to roll up your sleeves and get into the details when required.
  • You have experience and appetite for solving for present-day problems (e.g. reporting, compliance, budgeting), but also with future-focused work, such as forecasting and strategy.
  • You have an interest in learning about the practicalities of trading cryptocurrencies, which has become a necessary evil in our industry. Experience with alternative payment methods or crypto strategy is considered a major asset.
  • You are located within Australia (preferred) or New Zealand, and have proficiency with Australian tax and compliance requirements.
